Why did I write The Castes and the OutCastes?
Basically, I wanted a story in which the people looked like those from my background: Asian Indians. Growing up, I read so many books, but rarely, if ever, did the people look like me and never were they culturally similar to my family.
That’s the basis of it all.
And to create this, I decided on an odd kind of post-apocalyptic story, but something other than what would normally be expected, which would be a grim, brutal society. I imagined what would happen if people pulled together, like what almost always happens following a disaster. How would that society function, especially with a caste system? What if they created places of beauty, art, music, fine dining, and theater?
And yet, the ugly truth is that everything is constrained by their Caste system. That’s where Rukh and Jessira come in. They are the ones who turn society on its head and demonstrate a different way to maintain all this beauty. Those two are the real reason for The Castes and the OutCastes. They’re indomitable warriors, but it’s not their skill in battle that makes them special. It’s that they are inspirational and wonderful people. It’s not a surprise then, that they keep cropping up in my other books.

Such an amazing series! I appreciated how you wove your culture into the story and made its lessons very crucial to Rukh’s development. It definitely made me do some research!
