October 2021 newsletter

Hey y’all!

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything, but have no fear, I’ve been hard at work. How hard, you might ask? Hard enough that I’m done with A Necessary Heresy. I even have a cool video of me typing the magic words, “THE END”.

But like wiser folk say, it’s the journey that counts; not the destination, and this journey has been quite the expedition. This is the most difficult book I’ve ever written because it might also be my most important. A Necessary Heresy is the fulcrum around which the entire series revolves.

I can say that with absolute confidence because when I was writing the William Wilde series, I included many scenes from Seminal, and in doing so, I unwittingly wrote myself into a corner. I only discovered said corner while actually typing away at Instrument of Omens. This book leads me into that corner, but it also sets it up for me getting out of that corner.

In all honesty, if I could go back to my past self, I’d give him a thrashing. He really should have thought this out more clearly.

And that’s the end of my whining.

By the way, because I’m in the midst of editing, I find myself really enjoying the story. The journey—corners and all—is one I’m happy to travel. I like it a lot, including the set ups for what comes next… I can’t wait to find out what happens.

Oh, yes. When will I release the book. Well, I’m done with the first draft, and now comes lots of editing and input from alpha and beta readers. If they think the corner is not so cumbersome and that the path past it is strong, then—fingers crossed!—I should have it out by the end of the year.

Moving on to other news and stuff, my friend Phil Tucker decided to put his entire Chronicles of the Black Gate series in one volume. Eek! That’s almost 3500 pages (not a misprint) of a set of books that I absolutely love. The cover art is pretty fantastic, too. And how much for this massive amount of goodness?

Just $4.99! Here’s the link: https://www.amazon.com/Chronicles-Black-Gate-Phil-Tucker-ebook/dp/B09HHQ47WN

I’m also watching Breaking Bad only because I promised my sons I would. I’m getting worried for Hank. I really enjoyed Only Murders in the Building with Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. I had no idea she was such a good actor.

That’s it from my end. Have a wonderful October!

    1. Glad you enjoyed it! That’s always great to hear. Book 3 is coming along. Hopefully, the edits won’t require an immense amount of work.

    2. I gotta say that you’re books are incredible. Started testament of steel first on a random find and loved it, couldn’t put it down. Picked up memories of prophecies and it was the same, couldn’t put it down again. Was of course disappointed that the third book wasn’t out yet but then found the first 3 books(castes and outcastes)! Hah. So cool reading it this way actually because now I’m seeing all the memories Cinder had play out. Love these books, just wanted to give a shout out. I recommend these books to all I know who read. Keep up the great work, love it.

      1. Sorry, sorry, sorry about the late reply! Your message slipped through the cracks. So glad you like the books! And thank you so much for sending out the signal! It is so very much appreciated.

  1. Well I have really enjoyed the memories of prophecies series so far. I am now going to read your other works starting on a warriors path. I really am looking forward to discovering more of your literary universe. Thank you for all your hard work!

    1. Thank you for reaching and letting me know! The sequel hit a setback that turns out to be a blessing. It’ll be much better for the changes I’m going to have to make.

  2. Just completed your entire series. Character development was fantastic and biting my nails for the next release. Thank you for sharing your gift.

    1. Thank you for giving the books a chance. Hopefully the nailbiting will be worth it when the next book is released!

  3. Thank Davis for bring a more Asian twist to the fantasy genre, I would love to see more people of color in books rather than the usual Eurocentric stories.
Regarding the Anchored Worlds series, how many books do you anticipate writing?

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the books so far, and thankfully, there a lot more books being published these days that aren’t Eurocentric. It’s a great change that should have happened long ago.
As far as the Anchored Worlds, the current series, Instrument of Omens, should have around 7 books. Maybe less.

  4. I think I’ve found a new favourite author! I just read the first two Instrument of Omens books in a blitz over 5 days and am now holding my breath. Cant wait for the next book. I suppose I will have to read the Castes and Outcastes and William Wilde while I wait!

    1. New favorite author! Awesome! I’ll definitely take that compliment! And the good thing about the Castes and the OutCastes and William Wilde is all those references Cinder and Anya keep making will suddenly make sense. Even the story the gleeman told Cinder back in Swift Sword.

    1. Hi Randy,

I’m sorry about the slow reply, but real life work has kinda taken a lot of time lately. And I appreciate the offer to alpha/beta read. Can you contact me through through davisashura@davisashura.com, and we can go over what alpha/beta readers might do?

  5. *spoiler*

is the corner your talking about the weird time travel thing in William Wyld involving the dimensional gates that show cuts of cinder serving shet and bring him the magic orbs

    1. That is part of it, but the bigger angle in that box is how Cinder and Anya aren’t getting along and why that is the case.

  6. Hey first of love your work. Started and finished castes and outcastes series. Now ive finished both of the instruments of omens books. They ate awsome. My question for you is this. It the title you mention, necessary heresy the third book? Also how many books do you think will be in the series? And when do you reckon the audiobook version for book three will be released? Darn thsts three questions. Sorry just love the books sooo much

    1. Hi Samuel,

So glad you’ve enjoyed the books, and I’m especially grateful that you took a chance on them. As for the questions. Yes, A Necessary Heresy is the title for book 3. I’m thinking there will be either 6 or 7 books in the series. As for the audiobook for book 3, unfortunately I don’t have the answer to that one yet.

    1. Sadly, I do not. I just don’t have the time to do that kind of thing. Same with a Reddit subforum. Just don’t have the time.

  7. Got recommended Testament of Steel on a random Instagram ad. And I’ve always enjoyed fantasy books. From The Sword of Truth, to Game of Thrones. And even though I haven’t read William Wilde or A Warriors Path, I still really enjoyed both Testament of Steel and Memories of Prophecies, along with the world and characters that were brought to life. It’s been a fun story, and Cinders made up curse words gave me big time flashbacks to when I read Maze Runner and the made up curse words that the Gladers used.

I hope this series continues on for a while as I’m now invested in the world and characters!! (I really like how you kept Brilliance the snow tiger around throughout the books! And I’ve begun to come to like Riyne more as a character)

Definitely gonna recommend this series to people and definitely will pick up some William Wilde books and A Warriors Path

    1. A random IG ad got you hooked? Then it’s money well spent! As for the series, right now, I’m envisioning either 6 or 7 books. It won’t go on and on and on. There will be an ending, and I’m already plotting out what’s to come in books 4 and 5. Looking forward to getting there. I like Brilliance, too. I didn’t intend for her to stick around, but she kinda nosed her way in, which is just like a cat, isn’t it?

And thank you for spreading the signal. That’s really the best way books get discovered… other than IG ads, of course, lol.

    1. That’s awfully nice of you to say! What a great pick-em-up for the middle of the week.

  8. Was recently recommended Testament of steel randomly on Instagram and the books description intrigued me so I purchased the book. And I’m glad I did as it’s become a favorite book and now series of mine.

I like how the Instruments of Omens series can be read independently from the other series that correspond with Cinder and his story. As until I had read half the book I had no idea that it tied into 2 other series, and as a new reader of you’re I appreciated that and it makes me want to visit William Wilde and The Castes and the OutCastes series.

And if you still need some beta readers I’d love to see if I could help with that!

    1. Hi Justin,

Thank you for giving the books a try, and yes, I’m always very happy when people make the connection that the series are linked but can be read separately. Thank you for the kind offer to be a beta reader, but that list is full. However, I can always use an ARC reader if you’re interested. If you are, just email a good contact email.

      Davis

      1. That would be awesome! Thank you for the offer. What would be the best email to contact you through?

    1. Hi Dawson,

Thank you for this offer. It truly is humbling, and I emailed you with permission to set up the Discord channel. 12. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours Davis. Good news about Heresay – can’t wait for Anya and Cinder’s pending trip. Based on my Ashura reads to date I know that I’ll enjoy it. The suspenseful part for me is why.

Happy holidays, and thanks for the books.

    1. Happy Thanksgiving to you as well, Andrew! And A Necessary Heresy is in the hands of the beta readers so hopefully, I’ll still manage to get it out by late December/early January.

      Davis

  13. I have read all of the books and enjoy them very much. Cant wait for the A Necessary Heresy to come out. Thank you
