May 2022 Update!

by May 3, 2022Wonderings2 comments

It’s been awhile since I posted an update, so here goes. I started a Patreon, and I’m honestly shocked, amazed, and absolutely blown away at how many people have joined me. It’s not a ton, but I still think it’s awesome. Here’s the link for those interested: https://www.patreon.com/DavisAshura

Also, the story that I’m posting is Blood of a Novice, the first book in a new series, titled The Eternal Ephemera.

It’s an epic progression fantasy, and the story is about Cam Folde, youngest son of the no-good Folde family in the town of Traverse. Tragedy leads him onto a broken path where he lives down to the reputation of his family. In the dregs of despair, an unexpected opportunity offers him a chance to heal and become greater than he could have ever imagined.

But the price of this opportunity is nearly more than Cam can bear. There are some who sacrifice everything in order to see to his healing. And to make those sacrifices meaningful, Cam Folde must travel the rocky road of an Ephemeral Master and progress to Divinity.

And his choices are more limited than he knows because rakshasas have learned of him as well.

The series is part of the Anchored Worlds, although it doesn’t feature Rukh and Jessira…for the most part, although they are referenced. Right now, I’m putting out new chapters every Monday, and sometime in the summer, the number of chapters will likely increase. Also, the audiobook rights to the book have been sold to Podium Publishing, and Travis Baldree will be narrating. I’m so excited by that! How Travis ended up doing the project is a story in itself; one I’ll share some other time. The ebook will probably come out in early October, and I imagine the audiobook will be a few months afterward.

A word of warning for those considering joining me on Patreon, you need to understand that I am an absolutely terrible typist. I literally can hit one typo per paragraph. It’s quite astonishing, and you’ll see it if you join. However, I will eventually get professional editing done on the book, so sometime in June/July, there will be a marked improvement in the number of typos.

There is also new art that’s coming along, including how the rough sketches become final drafts. I’m especially excited to share the map of the new world, Salvation.

Speaking of Salvation, there is a story behind that world. You see, the very first book I ever wrote was way back in 2003, and it was about a young man from our world who discovers he’s an enchanter (not a wizard since JK Rowling has that whole “You’re a wizard, Harry” thing all sewn up). The young man’s name was William Wilde, and the name of the book was Salvation.

That’s right. William and Serena came before Rukh and Jessira. But the problem was that the book as written in 2003 was awful. Like burn it awful. Two subsequent drafts were only marginally better, and at some point, I figured I just wasn’t any good at writing, so I gave it up.

Then in 2008, my wife ran across an ad in our local paper for a short story writing class through our local community college. What my wife said was that—and I’m paraphrasing—since I always wanted to be a writer, here was a chance to learn if I really could become one.

So, I took the class, and my instructor, Kevin Keck, was wonderful. He didn’t teach me much about how to write, but more than anyone, he gave me the confidence that I could write. Kevin then taught a novel writing class right after the short story class, and I took that one as well.

And after that class was finished, a couple of the students and I formed a writer’s group that still meets to this day. I’d like to say the rest is history, but there is a long stretch of time between December 2009—when the novel writing class ended—and January 2014 when I published A Warrior’s Path.

What was I doing during that time? Learning to write. You see, I tried to write Salvation a couple more times afterward, and by then, it only bore the slightest resemblance to the original iteration. But all of the iterations shared the same feature: they were terrible. I reached a point where I had no idea what I was doing wrong, so I followed a tried-and-true path. I wrote fan fiction. In my case, it was about Superman and Wonder Woman. Don’t ask me why, but I figured those two couldn’t be too hard to write since they were iconic, their histories were well known, and why not?

Strangely enough, in the story Supes and WW were a couple, and I wrote two novels about them. They’re still in the computer; it’s very much second draft, but in writing those novels, I learned so much about what I was doing right and wrong. Without them, I couldn’t have written A Warrior’s Path.

The point of all this is simple. If you want to be a writer, you can make it happen. I basically had to write eight novels before I could tackle A Warrior’s Path, so for those who want to write, don’t let anything stop you.

Now, what about Instrument of Omens because I’m pretty sure most people want to know about that? Well, the audiobook for A Necessary Heresy releases on May 31st, which is awesome. I can’t wait for that, and as usual, Nick Podehl does the narration. As for book 4, I have the cover art for it coming along, and in the summer, I’ll start the and shoot for a release in the first quarter of 2023—March more likely than January.

As the summer rolls around, I’ll have more to share about IoO4. And I’m getting more and more excited to get back into the world of Seminal! Oh, yes. For those who can’t wait, IoO4 will also be beta released on Patreon.

It’s disappointing to read you replaced Nick Podehl as the narrator, he has a way of bringing characters to life, but I look forward to the stories continuation.

      Hi William,

Nick is still the narrator for ALL the Instrument of Omens novels, past, present, and future. It’s a brand new series where Travis Baldree is the narrator.
