August 2021

Hey everyone,

Sorry about the long delay in posting, but I completely forgot to do so. Thought I did, but I didn’t. Plus I was writing, which I’m sure most everyone would rather see me do. Anyway, let’s see what July was like… Hmm. Does hot count? Hot and muggy. That sounds about right, which means I was mostly indoors doing writing. Actually, I wasn’t writing new stuff, but editing old stuff. I edited the first 75% of A Necessary Heresy. I had to take a pause from adding to the story and make sure I knew where I had gone so far. Even prior to the edit, I knew there were a lot of missing elements that I hadn’t bothered to explore since I was too busy getting words and plot down.

But were those words and plot elements really what the story needed? That, I didn’t know, and the re-read and edit proved immeasurably useful. It gave me a lot of confidence about this book, and until the re-read, I was unsure about how well the story was coming along or hanging together.

Now, I feel much better. There are flaws, but those are fixable and don’t require shifting of walls or shoring up a rotten foundation. It’s more like accentuating what’s already there, adding a touch of paint, and hanging some curtains over bare windows.

I’m relieved.

I did take a weekend off from the editing, though, to attend an author’s retreat at the home of Michael Sullivan of Ryria fame. He and his wife, Robin, are so generous in offering their home and time to a bunch of cretinous writers. I’ve posted some pictures on Facebook about who else was present, and it was an absolutely wonderful time.

I haven’t been doing much reading, so I don’t have much to report on that end, but I have been watching TV, specifically, a show on HGTV called Home Town. It’s about Ben and Erin Napier, a couple from Mississippi, who are trying to revitalize their small town. In the process, they show how a little money can go a long way to making a home and town beautiful.

For me, though, the appeal is the fine furniture Ben crafts in each episode. They’re functional yet beautiful without being overly ornate, which is what I prefer. He’s especially skilled at turning, and his workshop is wonderful with all the tools a person could want.

I’m envious, and the reason is because before I started writing, I used to build furniture in my spare time. These were pieces I needed custom made for what I had in mind for my house, and since I couldn’t buy them, I had to make them myself. The first few pieces were rough, but I’ve been hooked ever since. In fact, if I had had a garage at the time, I might have decided to build furniture as a hobby instead of writing books.

All in all, I feel grateful for the path I’ve traveled. It’s been wonderful to be a writer, but stil, I sure would love to build furniture every now and then.

David, I just finished Castes and Outcastes, as you suggested. What a wonderful road to travel with you. Now I know who Rukh and Jessica are and am happily and impatiently awaiting your next novel in the trilogy. I really enjoyed this and couldn’t stop until finished. So glad I stumble on to your skill and talents as an author. What a wonderful imagination you have. Thank you again. I always know a great writer when I turn a page and want to know what happens next. BTW, I want my own Aia.

Lol. We all want our own Aia. She’s based off a calico girl I used to have. Still miss her. I also miss Arisa, and one day I’ll go back to explain why Rukh and Jessira left their world to come to Earth in William Wilde. That should be fun, like going back to a place I love. Also, the next book about Cinder and Anya should be out late this year or early next.

      Hi Grant,

Thank you for reaching out to me. The next book is Memories of Prophecies, and it should release as an audiobook on Dec. 7th. The third book is A Necessary Heresy, and the ebook for it should release in late December/early January with the audiobook some time later. My publisher hasn’t yet given me an exact date.
